California legislation clarifies role of Nurse Practitioners prescribing buprenorphine

In part to help address the growing opioid addiction problem, SB 554 (Stone) was passed by the California legislature and signed by the Governor in September 2017. This bill prohibits construing the Nursing Practice Act or any provision of state law from prohibiting a nurse practitioner from furnishing or ordering buprenorphine when done in compliance with the provisions of the Federal Comprehensive Addiction Recovery Act. The legislation also covers physician assistants.
